Invoked by devas for sake of their desired object be,
Adored by the lord of the devas every day certainly,

May she, who is the source of all good, the Isvari,

42. 5.81
She revered by us devas, besieged by asuras truly,
We remember you devotedly, destroys our calamities.'
43. 5.82

The Rishi said:
Prince! While devas engaged in praise, sang her glory,
Parvati came to bathe in the Ganga water visibly.
44. 5.83-84
She, lovely-browed, said to devas ’Who raised by you be?'
A holy goddess, sprung from her sheath, said clearly:

’This hymn by assembled devas is addressed to me,

49. 5.89

They both told Sumbha:
’O King, a certain woman, most beautiful surpassingly,
Dwells there shedding lustre on mount Himalaya truly.
50. 5.90
Such beauty was not seen by anyone previously,
Ascertain who she is, take possession of her clearly,
51. 5.91
A gem among women, of beautiful limbs exquisitely,
Illuminating the quarters with her luster there she be.
52. 5.92
Lord, whatever jewels, precious stones, elephants be,
Horses and others, they all now in your house do be.

59. 5.99
Lord of asuras, all gems brought by you be certainly,
Why this beautiful lady-jewel not seized by you be?’
60. 5.100

 The Rishi said:
On hearing these words Sumbha sent promptly,
The great asura Sugriva as messenger to the Devi.

’Go and tell her in my words and do thing correctly,
So that she may get nearer to me in love hurriedly.'

All choicest gems in three worlds in my possession be,
And so is the gem of elephants, Airavata certainly.
67.
The vehicle of the king of devas carried away be me,

With salutation they gave Uccaisravas, horse gem truly,
Which had arisen at the churning of milk-ocean clearly.

Beautiful lady, whatever rare objects among devas be,
The gandharvas and nagas are now with me certainly.
70. 5.111
We see you as the jewel of womankind in world truly,
Come to me, since we enjoyers of the best objects be.
71. 5.112
Take to me or my younger brother Nisumbha of ability,
O unsteady-eyed lady, for you in truth a jewel but be.
72. 5.113
Great wealth beyond compare, you get by marrying me.
Think over this in your mind and my wife agree to be."'
73. 5.114

The Rishi said:
Durga, adorable, auspicious, by whom this universe be,
When told so became serene and said but peacefully:
74. 5.115-116

 The Devi said:
‘You spoke the truth; nothing false is uttered surely,
Sumbha is sovereign so and likewise Nisumbha be.
75. 5.117-118
But in this matter, how can a promised false be?
Hear what I have promise out of foolishness already.
76. 5.119
"He who conquers me in battle, rids my pride fully,
Who is my match in strength, my husband shall be."
77. 5.120
’So Sumbha come, or Nisumbha the great surely,
Subdue me then take my hand in marriage swiftly.
78. 5.121

The messenger said:
’Devi, you are but haughty, talk not so before me,
None can stands before Sumbha or Nisumbha truly?
79. 5.122-124
All devas cannot face with even other asuras surely,
Why mention you, O Devi, a single woman clearly?
80. 5.124
Indra, other devas could not stand in battle certainly,
Against Sumbha, how will you face them strongly?
81. 5.125
On my word, go to Sumbha and Nisumbha promptly,
Let it not be that you go to them without your dignity.
82. 5.126

The Devi said:
’Yes Sumbha is strong, so is Nisumbha exceedingly,
I am helpless there stands my vow taken previously?
83. 5.127-128
Go back, tell the lord of asuras what I said carefully,
Let him do whatever he considers proper finally.'
84.
Here now ends the fifth chapter conclusively,
It ‘Devi’s Conversation with Messenger’ be,

Of Devi-Mahatmayam in Markandeya Puran truly,
During the period of Savarni, the Manu surely.
