प्रथमं शैलपुत्री च द्वितीयं ब्रह्मचारिणी।
तृतीयं चंद्रघण्टेति कुष्माण्डेती चतुर्थकम।
पंचम स्कन्दमातेति षुठ कात्यायनीति च।
सप्तमं कालरात्रीति महागौरति चाष्टम।
नवमं सिद्धिदात्री च नवदुर्गा प्रकीर्तिता।
Nav Durga the deity of the cosmic fort be,
She the embodiment of the divine energy,
The creative power, per the scriptures truly,
Has nine forms or dimensions in actuality.
1. SHAILPUTRI (The Daughter of Stone)
First day of Navratra - The nine nights holy,
Is dedicated to the worship of Shailputri,
Ma Durga nomenclatured as Shailputri,
Born in Himalaya, King of mountains be.
In this mold the mother is but seen to be,
With trident in right, lotus in left hand clearly,
And she is mounted on an ox comfortably,
Blessing her devotees ever but lovingly.
She daughter of Daksha, Brahma‘s son be,
In her earlier birth as Mother Sati previously,
As the daughter of Daksha she married be,
To the God of Gods, Mahadeva undoubtedly.
Amongst all the nine forms of Ma Durga Devi,
Shailaputri the most powerful, glorified of all be,
As per Upanishads she broke the pride fully,
Of the Gods by assuming form of Haimabati.
2. BRAHMACHARINI (Penance Doer)
Durga’s second form as Brahmacharini be,
Here "Brahma" means meditation certainly,
She meditator or penance practitioner be,
Take up meditation to win Lord Shiv actually.
Holds in her right hand a bead string of rosary,
In left a Kamandal - urn containing water holy,
When she reborn as daughter of Himalaya be,
Did penance to have Mahadeva as her hubby.
She so meditated on Narad’s advised clearly,
Took to meditation to win Shiv undoubtedly,
So known as Brahmacharini or Tapasyacharini,
She an inspiration to all her sincere devotees be.
This form gives everlasting success to devotees,
Enriches faculties of sacrifice, discipline, honesty,
. In times of utter distress her worship unfailingly,
Gives success, the willpower to achieve victory.
3. CHANDRAGHANTA (Lunargong)
Durga’s third form known as Chandraghanta be,
Half-moon seen on temple of Goddess clearly,
Her ten hands brandish ten weapons evidently,
. Mounted on a lion - on the third day of Navratri.
That devotee who earns blessings of Devi,
From sins and hazards set own self free,
Gains power to sense supernatural and see,
Smell eternal scent, hear sounds heavenly.
4. KUSHMANDA (Cosmic Egg Layer)
The fourth form is of Ma Kushmanda Devi,
She created universe with a smile happily,
When darkness prevailed, no universe be,
She the source of eternal power was surely.
Goddess has eight arms - Ashtabhuja be,
Worshiped on the fourth day of the Navratri,
To remove diseases, augments, miseries,
For the fame and strength in life certainly.
Mother Goddess is appeased unfailingly,
With the slightest of devotion in actuality,
If any one worships but whole-heartedly,
Devotee gains her favour unquestionably.
5. SKANDAMATA (The Mother of Skanda)
The fifth dimension of Mother Durga be,
Skandmata – Who Skanda’s mother* be,
With four arms, son in right hand plainly,
And a lotus in her lower right hand clearly.

Top left hand blessing, lower with lotus be,
Goddess is fair and sits on a lotus plainly,
As Padmasana mounted on a lion does be,
She fulfills the wishes of her true devotees.
6. KATYAYANI DEVI (The Daughter of Katyayana)
Katyayani, sixth dimension of Ma Durga be,
Sage Katyayana, son of great sage Kat be,
Pleaded and worshiped Paramba Bhagavati,
She born as his daughter, which She agreed.
When world terrorized by Mahishasura be,
Brahma, Vishnu, Shiv with their powers truly,
Formed a Goddess to slay the asura finally,
Katyayana worshiped her, so she is Katyayani.
Born on 14th day of new moon in Ashwin be,
She accepted sage Kattayan’s offer finally,
On occasion of Saptami, Astami and Navami
And slew Mahishasura on Dushmi ultimately
The Goddess is mounted on a lion does be,
Worshiped on 6th day of Durga puja surely,
If with a pure heart, soul one worships deity,
Gets success, wealth, salvation unfailingly.
From disease, sorrow, fear eliminated be,
The worship of this deity helps the devotee,
To free self from sin committed previously
Over cycle of births and rebirths certainly.
7. KALRATRI (Deadly Night)
Ma Durga's 7th dimension known as Kalratri,
Ma Kalratri - terror striking in appearance be,
But she is benevolent, also called Subhankari,
Gives favorable results - fear not her devotees.
Devi Mother Kalratri destroys all evil totally,
If anyone pleads with her whole-heartedly,
For saving from looming danger sincerely,
She protects that devotee ever unfailingly.
8. MAHAGAURI (The White Force)
8th dimension of Ma Durga is MahaGauri,
Her complexion white, dress white be,
To have Shiv as husband prayed earnestly,
Parvati, due to hard meditation, dark did be.
Lord Shiv pleased, bathed her in Ganga holy,
This holy water turned her fair subsequently,
Then she became known as Devi Maha Gouri,
Gives salvation – from all sin, freed is devotee.
9. SIDDHIDATRI (Boon Giver)
The 9th dimension of Ma Durga is Siddhidatri,
Boon giver - para-power blesses her devotee,
Per Devi Puran, Shiv prayed to her earnestly,
Then blessed with His eight para-powers did be.
Due to Her, Shiv as Ardh Narishwara glorified be,
Per Markendey Puran, eight* types of success be,
She rendering all the successes to her devotees.
She worshipped on 9th day of Durga puja clearly.
She ultimate Goddess among Navadurga be,
After worshiping other forms Ma Durga sincerely,
Devotee can then start the worship of this deity,
And are bestowed with all the success finally.
