Gayatri Mantra
गायत्री मंत्र
ॐ भूर्भुवस्व: तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यम् भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि।
धियो यो न: प्र प्रचोदयात्॥
Om! Let me meditate on Ma Gayatri, Her Glory,
The Creator, Destroyer and enlightening energy,
Lead me from the darkness to light illuminatingly,
Destroy sins, show higher wisdom, intellect to me.
Primer
Ma Gayatri the Goddess of Learning be,
The second consort of Brahma evidently;
Sarasvati, his wife, when late for yagya be,
Gayatri found as alternate by Indra clearly.

Faced with Devi Sarasvati’s curse clearly,
His worship, apart at Pushkar, stopped fully,
Ma Gayatri combination of all three devi’s,
Lakshmi, Parvati, Sarasvati together truly.

She portrayed on a red lotus typically,
With a swan or peacock affectionately,
She – the mother of all Vedas does be,
Epithet of universal Para Brahman be.

She blends all the attributes undoubtedly,
Of Brahman in feminine form completely,
Including the past, present and future truly,
And all three realms of existence certainly.

She the Trimurti combined as one be,
With ten arms, Vishnu’s weapons surely,
Her five heads and ten eyes see clearly,
In eight directions, earth and sky totally.

Symbolizing all her reincarnations be,
A pure white swan showing her purity,
As Education Goddess - knowledge be,
She holding cure in the other hand truly.

Goddess Gayatri the manifestation be,
Of consort of Lord Brahma, Saraswati,
Ma Gayatri regarded as Veda Mata be,
The mother of all Vedas is Ma Gayatri.

Ma Gayatri portrayed with five faces be,
She is mounted on lotus flower clearly,
Her five faces symbolize Pranas surely,
Also the five elements of universe truly.

Ma Gayatri venerated as Hindu Trimurti,
Of Lords Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh be,
Epithet of Ma Lakshmi, Parvati, Saraswati.
Gayatri Mantra is dedicated to Veda Deity.

Overview
World bleeding, engulfed in darkness, war be,
Plagued with strife, dissension, hate, jealousy,
Vandalism, floods, famines, quakes, poverty,
Violence and terrorism – all stalking earth be.
Lost in erosion of values, spiritual bankruptcy,
Dulling of conscience, pollution not physical only,
Its cure is with spiritual resurgence of humanity,
Moral regeneration, cleansing of mortal minds be.
Gayatri-Upasna the most effective instrument be,
For getting mental purity, removing evil tendencies,
Providing generation of spiritual forces within truly,
Thus situation is redeemed with power of Gayatri.
Gayatri disperses clouds of ignorance gradually,
Lets the true devotee see the spiritual Sun finally,
Which is shining behind the dark clouds eternally,
Reaches his goal - oneness with that Sun finally."
Since primeval dawn for Hindus, Mantra Gayatri,
Of orthodox and unorthodox – the divine elixir be,
The philosopher's stone, spiritual food for hungry,
Key to life's golden secrets and enlightening surely.
With sovereign powers for ambition fulfilment be,
Both the temporal as well as spiritual undoubtedly,
The seeker of worldly success has a walk-over easy,
Enter kingdom of heaven and unites with Him finally.
Mother Gayatri’s grace showers happiness surely,
And the devotee faces the vision of God eventually,
By repeating of this mantra the mind surcharged be,
For the spiritual flight into the divine light ultimately.
Gayatri occurs in all the four Vedas unquestionably,
And is referred in superlative terms by many Rishis,
Gayatri is called the mother of the Four Vedas rightly,
Which in deeper sense the totality of knowledge be.
Gayatri exists on the very higher planes undoubtedly,
With regard to the Manifest and unmanifest surely,
It has been declared that there no mantra or Jaap be,
Which can be comparable to the mantra of Gayatri.
'न गायत्री समो मन्त्रः न गायत्री समो जपः'
She the most excellent and the foremost mantra be,
That the famed Rishis of yore practised on regularly,
She bestower of liberation, the panacea for all ills be,
Mother Gayatri the purifier of all the fallen unfailingly.
In the Sri Devi Bhagwat she is hailed but very clearly,
As a manifestation of Absolute Brahman undoubtedly,
She imparter of salvation and repository of divine glory,
The power dedicated to the Supreme Being universally.
परब्रह्म स्वरूपा च निर्वाणपद दामिनी ।
ब्रह्म तेजोमयी शक्तिस्तदधिष्ठत् देवता ॥
This supreme mantra has been resorted to certainly,
Not only by mortals but by the gods themselves surely,
For attaining the very actual true perfection ultimately,
In Sri Devi Bhagvatam (16/15) it is mentioned explicitly:
सर्ववेदसार भूता गायन्त्र्यास्तु समर्चना ।
ब्रह्यादयोपि सन्ध्यायां तां ध्यायन्ति जपन्ति च ॥
Worship of Gayatri the quintessence of Vedas be,
Even gods like Lord Brahma meditate on Gayatri,
Celebrated work "Gayatri Manjari", records clearly,
The talk between Lord Shiv and his consort Parvati:
She asked Him,
"O, adept in Yoga! Which Yoga enabled you ultimately,
To earn such numerous Siddhis or occult powers truly?
Which Yoga did you practise to be a realised soul finally,
Lord Shiv responded underlining the sanctity of Gayatri.
He spoke :
गायत्री वेदमातास्ति साद्या शक्तिर्मता भुवि ।
जगतां जननी चैव तामुपासेहमेव हि ॥
"Gayatri is the mother of the Vedas; on plane earthly,
Gayatri is also known as called the Primordial Energy,
She who is the mother of the entire world surely,
And I have worship Her – She is my Yoga - Gayatri."
भूलोकस्मास्य गायत्री कामधेनुर्मता बुधैः
लोक आश्रमणेनामु सर्व मेवाधिगच्छातिः ॥
The scholars have acclaimed that Mother Gayatri,
She is the actual desire-fulfilling for every devotee,
Also for the cows of this earth but unquestionably,
Men of this world can achieve all by her aid surely."
A Brahmin's son must ever focus on Mother Gayatri,
All aspirations are materialise through it alone truly,
No other spiritual or religious practice required be”,
Of Gayatri Mantra, Savita or Sun is presiding deity.
It Savitri Mantra, Drishta Rishi Vishwamitra but be,
Savitri Upanishad states Vishwamitra imparted truly,
To Sri Ram, Lakshman the knowledge of Savitri-Gayatri,
During their studies when they lived in his monastery.
Shrimat Bhagwat in Canto X, Chapter 70, verse six clearly,
Describes Lord Krishna, his early morning routine daily,
After bathing, cladding in clean clothes, doing Sandhya truly,
Lord Krishna used to perform Jaap in silence of Ma Gayatri.
In Shanti Parva of the Mahabharat (Chapter 150) actually,
Yudhishthira posed a question to Bhishma Pitamah clearly:
"O Grand Sir, well-versed in all scriptures, Pray do tell me,
Which Mantra Jaap productive of the highest virtue be?
Which be repeated at departure, entrance time fruitfully,
At the commencement of every important work actually,
Which Mantra’s repetition confers peace, protection fully,
Provides annihilation of adversaries, from fear immunity?"
And replied Bhishma Pitamah:
"Savitri the most ancient, eternal and hallowed Mantra be,
Sanctioned by the Vedas – it is the heart of all souls surely,
Chandravansh, Suryavansh, Raghuvansh, Kuruvansh kings truly,
Have performed Gayatri Jaap after purifying selves clearly."
A merit of this great Mantra its protectiveness unfailingly,
It shields one from dangers; it like wearing an amour be,
This is the proof against all kinds of assaults undeniably,
It is named Gayatri as it protects one who chanting it be.
'गायन्तं त्रायते यस्माद् गायत्रीति स्मृता बुधैः'
Gayatri is unrivalled in its potency of liquidating sins fully,
Of destroying evil Samskaras or past impressions totally,
Manu stated so on the bank of a river or in a forest clearly,
All sin rid, as snake of its slough, for performer of Gayatri.
सहस्त्रकत्वस्त्वभ्यस्म बहिरेतत्त्रिकं द्विजः ।
महतोप्येनसो भासात्त्वचेवाहिर्विमुच्यते ॥
In the famed Padma Puran it has been stated very clearly,
The recitation of Gayatri burns up all the sins, large or tiny,
गायन्त्र्यास्तु परं नास्ति शोधनं पापकर्मणाम् ।
महाव्याहृतिसंयुक्ता प्रणवेन च संजपे ॥
Taittariya Aranyaka states significance of chanting Gayatri,
And offering of 'Arghya' towards the Sun at dawn daily;
Mind and body are the sources of our worldly activities,
With likes, dislikes, emotions, appetites and cravings be,
Causing avid base instincts which try to conquer clearly,
Destroy spiritual spirit in us - the Brahman - within surely.
The essential brilliance of human intellect thus clouded be,
By approaching of these passions and Jaap of Gayatri,
its consequent effects are thunder and lightning actually,
Which do descend down upon them but ever unfailingly.
Gayatri Mantra recitation set as part of daily worship be,
Performed a purificatory act at dawn or dusk preferably,
A method of reintegrating one's mind that has run wildly,
And has drowned in total inertia in the night completely.
Gayatri ends past sins, evil Samskaras, purifies heart fully,
Wipes impure desires, turns mind from sinful acts surely,
Thus past Karma (undesirable actions) not effective be,
Like the parched seeds which do not sprout but positively.
The Gayatri Sadhak slowly shuns the immoral acts surely,
Gayatri enjoins to focus minds on Supreme Being truly,
She Bhargo in Vedas and Jyoti in the Upanishads does be,
So, nature evolves, instinct renovates, mind progressive be.
With purified mind, light of Buddhi is irradiating clearly,
Truths of higher life reveal themselves from within fully,
Aspirant develops Ritambhara pragyan' (intuition) finally,
And devotee attains beatitude and blessedness ultimately.
Shanksmriti (12/15) states no power exists but for Gayatri,
Which is ever catching the hand of the sinner in actuality,
That can rescue person from the ocean of hell in reality,
Into which one falls – but the devotion of Mother Gayatri.
गायन्या परं नास्ति दिवि चेह च पावनम् ।
हस्तत्राणप्रदा देवी पततां नरकार्णवे ॥
Gayatri excellent tranquilizer, effective in imparting peace be,
Quells agitations by negative acts, repetitive tendencies,
Ends worries and transports us to state of bliss, serenity,
By understanding repeating it, adverse leanings rid be.
Unique excellence of Gayatri must attributed to fact be,
That it combines prayer with Mantra – it prayer to Sun be,
To purify our intellect, to stimulate intelligence positively,
It enables shedding of darkness, enlightening mind fully.
Sun, cosmic energy symbol, intellect mien of such energy,
Gayatri Mantra an invocation to Savita for more light be,
It fans spiritual aim spark to roaring flame of devotee,
Jivatma to Parmatma, source, life goal, not things worldly.
It calls for Enlightenment of highest kind in universe truly,
For knowledge making one realizes oneness with Him fully,
He source of knowledge, power, bliss, the One in reality,
Her devotee prays for just spiritual consciousness solely.
Gayatri prayer a quest for knowledge and illumination be,
For sheer value as mantra, Gayatri Mantra without peer be,
Gayatri Mantra not chanted for material, physical gain worldly,
A prayer to unveil Self, manifest as Pure wisdom in life truly.
In substance the Gayatri Mantra implies:
Let the Divine forces or Divine Consciousness flow into me,
To purify, raise me to a higher enlightenment and sensitivity.
