देवी कोटेश्वरम सुद्धमपपगहनीम कामरूपिणी
नमामि मुक्तिकमाया देहि मुक्तिं हरप्रिये
Dhumavati "the Smoky One", fearsome old, widow ugly,
Inauspicious, unattractive, as crow, Chaturmas period be,
Augur not well at all according to the Hindu calendar truly,
The Great Void before creation and after dissolution be.
Though Dhumavati is associated with ill-omens largely,
Her hymn talks of both her positive, negative energy,
She soft-hearted, bestower of boons, great teacher be,
Who reveals the ultimate Wisdom of the universe truly,
Her ugly form teaches to look beyond superficial clearly,
Seek within, the inner truths, which matters ultimately,
Dhumavati bestow siddhis or the powers extraordinary,
Frees from troubles, grants salvation to the devotee,
Dhumavati also worshipped by individuals does be,
Seeking life partners, for powers, renounce worldly.
She is compared to Nairrti, God of Sickness, Misery,
She Goddess of hunger, thirst, death, despair, poverty.
Dhumavati is believed to have a bad temper surely,
Boosts unhappy atmosphere, rife and quarrels truly.
Dhumavati pale, unsteady in gait, brutal in thought be,
Tall in her figure and is dressed in clothes very dirty,
Her earrings discolored, ever in morose, widowed be,
Second birth, on horseless chariot with crow flag be,
She is old with sagging breasts and her eyes red be,
She possession of all, yet endowed with desires fully,
She has a protruding crooked nose, is hungry, thirsty,
Ever quarrelsome, frightening to enemies of devotees,
Her exists after sunset until dark and night does be,
And ends with full sunrise – blesses, liberates truly,
She resides at the home of poor people as Alakshmi,
She is connected with illness or conditions unhealthy,
She the actual cause of other disturbances does be,
Concerned with mental, physical facets of life surely.
Niriti but related with death, bad luck, decay does be,
Of unfulfilled needs, desire, anger, cowardice clearly,
All the negative aspects that make the life unhappy,
But provides freedom from them to her true devotees.
She was born when gods, demons churned ocean fully,
In search of nectar, given to sage Dussaha as wife truly,
She could not bear any sound or sight which related be,
To anything holy or any kind of pious, virtuous activities,
Sage Dussaha complained to Lord Vishnu accordingly,
Who advised: She his wife, so in ominous places do be,
If happy she relieves illness and grief of all types fully,
But destroys all happiness, prosperity if she is unhappy,
She appears as Smoke and hence called “Dhumavati”,
She represents an aggressive, assertive aspect of Sati.
Dhumavati guards the Southeast direction undauntedly,
Arose from flames which Sati had jumped into angrily,
But the Pranatosini-Tantra gives yet another story,
Of her consuming Shiv to satisfy her hunger actually,
Shiv asks her to disgorge him, but she refused truly,
So Shiv incensed, curses she in form of a widow be.
Sati is the only Mahavidya having no consort clearly,
Consuming Shiv, destroys male element universally,
She is left with nothing – a horseless chariot only,
And nowhere left to go in the life unquestionably,
Dhumavati linked with sex and in sexual activity be,
Likes to be intoxicated, deified by intoxicated devotee,
Ma Dhumavati has all the abilities to destroy enemy,
Through devotion, seeker gets strength, power truly,
Very few temples devoted to Dhumavati Ma do be,
Revered in isolated places as cremation grounds be.

श्रीधूमावतीकवचम्
श्रीगणेशाय नमः ।
अथ धूमावती कवचम् ।
श्रीपार्वत्युवाच –
धूमावत्यर्चनं शम्भो श्रुतं विस्तरतोमया ।
कवचं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तस्या देव वदस्व मे ॥१॥
श्रीभैरव उवाच –
शृणुदेवि परं गुह्यं न प्रकाश्यं कलौयुगे ।
कवचं श्रीधूमावत्याश्शत्रुनिग्रहकारकम् ॥२॥
ब्रह्माद्यादेवि सततं यद्वशादरिघातिनः ।
योगिनोभवछत्रुघ्ना यस्याध्यान प्रभावतः ॥३॥
ॐ अस्य श्रीधूमावतीकवचस्य पिप्पलाद
ऋषिः अनुष्टुप्छन्दः श्रीधूमावती देवता
धूं बीजम् स्वाहाशक्तिः धूमावती कीलकम् शत्रुहनने पाठे विनियोगः ।
ॐ धूं बीजं मे शिरः पातु धूं ललाटं सदावतु ।
धूमानेत्रयुगं पातु वती कर्णौसदावतु ॥४॥
दीर्घातूदरमध्ये तु नाभिं मे मलिनाम्बरा ।
शूर्पहस्ता पातु गुह्यं रूक्षारक्षतु जानुनी ॥५॥
मुखं मे पातु भीमाख्या स्वाहा रक्षतु नासिकाम् ।
सर्वं विद्यावतु कष्टं विवर्णा बाहुयुग्मकम् ॥६॥
चञ्चला हृदयं पातु दुष्टा पार्श्वं सदावतु ।
धूतहस्ता सदा पातु पादौ पातु भयावहा ॥७॥
प्रवृद्धरोमा तु भृशं कुटिला कुटिलेक्षणा ।
क्षृत्पिपासार्दिता देवी भयदा कलहप्रिया ॥८॥
सर्वाङ्गं पातु मे देवी सर्वशत्रुविनाशिनी ।
इति ते कवचं पुण्यं कथितं भुवि दुर्लभम् ॥९॥
न प्रकाश्यं न प्रकाश्यं न प्रकाश्यं कलौ युगे ।
पठनीयं महादेवि त्रिसन्ध्यं ध्यानतत्परैः ।

विवर्णा चंचला कृष्णा दीर्घा च मलिनाम्बरा,
विमुक्त कुंतला रूक्षा विधवा विरलद्विजा,
काकध्वजरथारूढा विलम्बित पयोधरा,
सूर्पहस्तातिरुक्षाक्षी धृतहस्ता वरान्विता,
प्रवृद्वघोणा तु भृशं कुटिला कुटिलेक्षणा,
क्षुत्पिपासार्दिता नित्यं भयदा काल्हास्पदा।

ॐ प्रातर्वा स्यात कुमारी कुसुम-कलिकया जप-मालां जपन्ती।
मध्यान्हे प्रौढ-रुपा विकसित-वदना चारु-नेत्रा निशायाम॥
सन्ध्यायां ब्रिद्ध-रुपा गलीत-कुच-युगा मुण्ड-मालां वहन्ती।
सा देवी देव-देवी त्रिभुवन-जननी चण्डिका पातु युष्मान ॥१॥
बद्ध्वा खट्वाङ्ग कोटौ कपिल दर जटा मण्डलं पद्म योने:।
कृत्वा दैत्योत्तमाङ्गै: स्रजमुरसी शिर: शेखरं ताक्ष्र्य पक्षै: ॥
पूर्ण रक्त्तै: सुराणां यम महिष-महा-श्रिङ्गमादाय पाणौ।
पायाद वौ वन्ध मान: प्रलय मुदितया भैरव: काल रात्र्या ॥२॥

वामे कर्णे म्रिगाङ्कं प्रलया परीगतं दक्षिणे सुर्य बिम्बम्।
कण्डे नक्षत्र हारं वर विकट जटा जुटके मुण्ड मालम्॥
स्कन्धे कृत्वोरगेन्द्र ध्वज निकर युतं ब्रह्म कङ्काल भारम्।
संहारे धारयन्ती मम हरतु भयं भद्रदा भद्र काली ॥५॥
तैलोभ्यक्तैक वेणी त्रयु मय विलसत् कर्णिकाक्रान्त कर्णा।
लोहेनैकेन् कृत्वा चरण नलिन कामात्मन: पाद शोभाम्॥
दिग् वासा रासभेन ग्रसती जगादिदं या जवा कर्ण पुरा-
वर्षिण्युर्ध्व प्रब्रिद्धा ध्वज वितत भुजा साSसी देवी त्वमेव॥६॥
संग्रामे हेती कृत्तै: स रुधिर दर्शनैर्यद् भटानां शिरोभी-
र्मालामाबध्य मुर्घ्नी ध्वज वितत भुजा त्वं श्मशाने प्रविष्टा॥
दृंष्ट्वा भुतै: प्रभुतै: प्रिथु जघन घना बद्ध नागेन्द्र कान्ञ्ची-
शुलाग्र व्यग्र हस्ता मधु रुधिर मदा ताम्र नेत्रा निशायाम्॥७॥
दंष्ट्रा रौद्रे मुखे स्मिंस्तव विशती जगद् देवी! सर्व क्षणार्ध्दात्सं
सारस्यान्त काले नर रुधिर वसा सम्प्लवे धुम धुम्रे॥
काली कापालिकी त्वं शव शयन रता योगिनी योग मुद्रा।
रक्त्ता ॠद्धी कुमारी मरण भव हरा त्वं शिवा चण्ड धण्टा॥८॥

ॐ धुमावत्यष्टकं पुण्यं, सर्वापद् विनिवारकम्।
य: पठेत् साधको भक्तया, सिद्धीं विन्दती वंदिताम्॥१॥
महा पदी महा घोरे महा रोगे महा रणे।
शत्रुच्चाटे मारणादौ, जन्तुनां मोहने तथा॥२॥
पठेत् स्तोत्रमिदं देवी! सर्वत्र सिद्धी भाग् भवेत्।
देव दानव गन्धर्व यक्ष राक्षरा पन्नगा: ॥३॥
सिंह व्याघ्रदिका: सर्वे स्तोत्र स्मरण मात्रत:।
दुराद् दुर तरं यान्ती किं पुनर्मानुषादय:॥४॥
स्तोत्रेणानेन देवेशी! किं न सिद्धयती भु तले।
सर्व शान्तीर्भवेद्! चानते निर्वाणतां व्रजेत्॥५॥
